ATLANTA — Democrat Everton Blair won the special election runoff Tuesday to represent Georgia’s 13th Congressional District for the remainder of the late U.S. Rep. David Scott’s term.
Blair, a former Gwinnett County School Board chairman, defeated Marcye Scott, the late congressman’s daughter. The Associated Press called the race for Blair Tuesday evening.
The election fills the vacancy created by David Scott’s death on April 22. Scott had represented the district since 2003.
Democratic Party of Georgia Chair Charlie Bailey congratulated Blair following the result, saying the representative-elect would advocate for working families. Bailey also criticized President Donald Trump and congressional Republicans over health care and the cost of living.
Blair will serve only the remainder of Scott’s term, which expires in January. He is not a candidate for the next full term. Democrat Jasmine Clark and Republican Jonathan Chavez will face off in the November general election.
The 13th District includes portions of Clayton, DeKalb, Gwinnett, Henry, Newton and Rockdale counties.
