MABLETON, Georgia — A petition calling on the Georgia General Assembly to examine the future of the city of Mableton and consider a process for dissolving the municipality has attracted more than 1,980 signatures.
The Change.org petition asks state lawmakers to evaluate Mableton’s fiscal, operational and governance impacts and either consider legislation dissolving the city or give residents an opportunity to vote on its future.
Organizers cite concerns about the long-term financial effects of cityhood, duplication of services already provided by Cobb County or neighboring municipalities, additional administrative costs and the efficiency of overlapping government responsibilities.
The petition also raises questions about Mableton’s long-term financial sustainability and whether voters had sufficient information about the potential costs and effects of incorporation before the city was created.
It does not, by itself, have the force of law. Instead, organizers say they plan to provide the petition to members of the Georgia General Assembly and other elected officials to demonstrate community support for a review of the city’s continued viability.
