ATLANTA (SmyrnaVinings.News) — A federal judge has dismissed a Justice Department lawsuit seeking an unredacted copy of Georgia’s statewide voter registration list, including information the state keeps confidential.
The department sought voters’ Social Security information, driver’s license numbers and dates of birth. Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger argued that Georgia could comply with federal election law without releasing those details.
What the court found: Federal law does not override Georgia’s voter privacy law or require the state to disclose the sensitive information the department requested, according to the secretary of state’s office. The judge granted Raffensperger’s motion to dismiss and denied the federal government’s motion to compel production of the records.
What Raffensperger said: He said his office would continue working with federal officials while protecting information that Georgia law requires it to keep confidential.
