Kemp declares emergency, pauses state fuel taxes

ATLANTA (SmyrnaVinings.News) — Gov. Brian Kemp has declared a state of emergency and suspended Georgia’s motor fuel excise tax for 30 days, beginning at 12:01 a.m. Sept. 29 and running through Oct. 29.

The suspended tax is 33.3 cents per gallon of gasoline and 37.3 cents per gallon of diesel. The governor’s office said Georgia’s average prices were $4.19 for regular gasoline and $6.24 for diesel when it announced the order.

What else changes: Kemp’s order also temporarily suspends state weight limits on commercial vehicles. His office said the measure is intended to reduce transportation costs for everyday goods.

Why now: Kemp cited global market volatility and said the tax suspension would provide relief to Georgia residents and small businesses. The announcement gives retailers time to adjust, so pump prices may not fall immediately.
