Clemency meeting set for Stacey Humphreys before scheduled execution

ATLANTA — The Georgia State Board of Pardons and Paroles has scheduled a Sept. 15 clemency meeting for Stacey Ian Humphreys, who faces execution for the 2003 murders of Cindy Williams and Lori Brown in Cobb County.

The Department of Corrections has scheduled his execution for 7 p.m. Sept. 16 at the Georgia Diagnostic and Classification Prison in Jackson.

Board members will hear testimony for and against clemency beginning at 9 a.m.

What happens next: Following the meeting, the board may commute Humphreys’ death sentence to life in prison with or without the possibility of parole, issue a stay or deny clemency. Only the parole board can grant executive clemency to a condemned inmate in Georgia.

A Cobb County Superior Court execution order established a window from Sept. 16 through Sept. 23 for the Department of Corrections to carry out the sentence.

The background: Humphreys was found guilty on Sept. 25, 2007, of malice murder, felony murder, aggravated assault, armed robbery and kidnapping with bodily injury in connection with the killings.
