SMYRNA, Georgia (SmyrnaVinings.News) – Smyrna residents and public safety officials gathered Friday to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks and honor the first responders and civilians who died.
The ceremony, sponsored by the Smyrna Public Safety Foundation, included a presentation of the colors by the Smyrna Police Department Honor Guard, the national anthem, a wreath presentation and a moment of reflection. Police officers, firefighters, local elected officials and community members attended.
Brian Marcos, the city’s fire chief and emergency management director, said the attacks demonstrated the commitment ordinary citizens make when they enter public service. He said first responders accept responsibilities ranging from daily station duties to risking their lives for their neighbors.
Keith Zgonc, Smyrna’s police chief, encouraged attendees to share their memories of Sept. 11 with younger people who were not alive when the attacks occurred. He also urged people to remember the national unity that followed the attacks.
City Councilman Glenn Pickens thanked local police officers, firefighters, veterans and military personnel for their service. He said remembering the attacks requires more than an annual observance and called on residents to honor those who died by supporting their community.
Ahead of the ceremony, Smyrna police officers, firefighters and local Scouts planted 400 American flags as a tribute.
